How to Stop Birds from Congregating in Your Backyard Swimming Pool

Having a pool in your own backyard is like bringing a slice of tropical paradise to your home, at least until the local birds decide to go swimming with all of their friends. Unfortunately, bird waste can get into your pool and cause illness, not to mention a dirty and unattractive swimming area. In addition to scheduling regular cleanings with a pool contractor in San Diego, you can also take some steps for yourself to keep birds out of your pool.

Create a Visual Impediment

Birds are visual creatures. One way to keep them out of your pool is to place a visual impediment in their line of sight. Use poles and fishing line to create a grid or an “x” formation high enough above your pool so that no one runs into it, but low enough that it doesn’t interfere with the neighbors or utilities. The grid won’t cause trouble for swimming in the pool.

Use Yard Art

Recycle some old CDs by hanging them from the trees around your yard. When the sunshine hits the disks, the light reflects everywhere. If you don’t have any trees, hang the CDs on poles, planters and other tall objects near your pool. Birds don’t like the reflections and will stay away from your pool.

Use Decoy Predators

Just as gardeners use a scarecrow to keep the birds from eating the fruits and vegetables in the garden, you can use decoy predators to scare off the birds. Invest in some plastic owls, snakes and other creatures. Move these plastic animals around your yard every few days so the birds don’t get used to their presence.

Keeping birds out of your pool is easy with these creative steps. These strategies won’t harm the birds but will keep your pool clean.
