Swimming is a great way to enjoy the summer months, but it’s vitally important to stay safe. Follow these safety tips to fully enjoy your summer fun.

Keep Your Fun in the Sun Safe

During the hot summer months, there’s nothing like having a pool in your backyard to beat the heat. Whether you’ve had a pool for years or if you’re in the market for pool construction in San Diego, you need to be sure your pool will be a safe place for everyone to enjoy. Practicing pool safety and being prepared for emergencies will give you the peace of mind you need to enjoy your pool to the fullest.

Establish the Rules

Run or roughhouse too much at a public pool, and you can be sure the lifeguard is going to blow the whistle on you, but you need to establish the same kind of rules for your home pool. Set up a list of safety rules and make sure any kids present know them and obey them. Never leave children unattended in a pool, and be sure whoever is watching them is a mature, responsible adult.

Keep Safety Equipment On Hand

Even good swimmers can run into trouble, and even if your pool isn’t particularly large, a child or adult may need help if they find themselves in distress in the deep end. Keep flotation devices on hand to throw out to anyone who made need them. It’s also a good idea to have a pair of scissors available in case anyone gets hair or loose clothing caught in a filter. Having a phone handy in case you need to contact 911 is important, and you should keep a first-aid kit handy to take care of any bumps or cuts that might occur. Have sunscreen available as well. Even the most waterproof sunscreens won’t stand up to hour after hour of swimming, and you should recoat your kids every couple hours to make sure they won’t get burned.

Consider enrolling in a CPR class as well. Basic first aid is always a useful skill to obtain for any situation, and the addition of CPR training will make you more confident and ready to take action if there is ever an emergency.
