Decoding Pool Builder Jargon

A wide view of a pool and spa that is obscure by lush plants and trees.

Here we help decode some common terms that appear regularly when trying to find the best route to go for installing a new pool.

Decoding Pool Builder Jargon

You may be thinking about installing a new pool or remodeling an existing one that came with the house when you bought it ages ago. The problem is that through all your research, you constantly see words that really have no meaning to you but are apparently crucial to your needs in the pool building process.

What’s a Vinyl Liner?

Depending on who you ask, “vinyl liner” can mean different things to different people.

In the pool builder world, it’s often a bright blue, vinyl waterproof barrier that goes on the sides of affordable pools. The upsides to vinyl liner is that you have numerous color options, installation is fairly quick, and has a lower initial cost.

To Cope or Not to Cope

Coping is a term that if you’re considering a pool renovation, you might come across frequently.

Coping is going to come up a lot if you’re dealing with a concrete pool, too. Basically, the rounded edge of your swimming pool that slightly juts out is what the coping is and based off of the condition it is, it may need to be re-done. It can be done in either concrete or stone.

Coping is important because it serves two main purposes: it keeps the water from overflowing out of your pool and it can provide a great decorative purpose, enhancing the overall feel of your pool.

Hardscaping

With any pool installation, or pool renovations, you’ll have the opportunity to improve your entire backyard.

During your initial search, you may come across hardscaping options which will make you think “Well, isn’t that just what landscaping is, too?” No!

Hardscaping is taking placement of non-plant elements such as fences, walkways, paving, lighting and arranging them in a decorative manner. The possibilities are endless!
