Pool Builder: Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Pool Contractor

 In Pools

You’ve made the decision to hire a pool builder. Congratulations! In a few short months you will have transformed your backyard into an inviting oasis. But before you fire up the BBQ and set up those lounge chairs, you need to find a reputable pool builder who will listen to your wants and needs and deliver a swimming pool design that exceeds your expectations. A quick Google search will bring up dozens of options—but not all pool builders are created equal. Here are some questions to ask before you sign a contract.

Have you built pools in my neighborhood?

This question is important for two reasons: it lets you know that the company has experience with your particular surroundings and understands any HOA requirements. It also gives you a quick list of references you can contact and pools you might easily view. Reputable companies will be happy to provide references and even encourage that you call them.

What is your expertise?

How long has the company has been in business? How many pools do they build a year? Will the owner be working with you? Is there a project supervisor who will oversee the build and be your point of contact? Essentially, find out as much as you can about the company’s history and their work process. What happens if something goes wrong? How do they rectify the situation? These are all things you want to know and consider up front.

Do you design outdoor living spaces?

Chances are that pool you envision comes with an outdoor kitchen and impeccable landscaping. If so, you’ll want to find a pool builder who can transform your entire backyard for one turnkey price. This will ensure a seamless design and eliminate the hassle of dealing with and coordinating multiple companies.

Do you use subcontractors?

A lot of pool builders subcontract various facets of the build. It’s important to find out who, exactly, will be working on your pool. How long these subcontractors have been employed by the pool builder and if they have any references.

While you shouldn’t expect a pool builder to offer you a pool design for free, reputable companies will discuss your project and give you some ballpark figures. These discussions can be very helpful in deciding what pool company best fits your needs and budget.
